The Writers and Artists Yearbook is a hugely useful guide and a perfect start for anyone trying to get published. Yes all the info is probably available free on the internet but who wants to start trawling through all that shit!
I made the decision early on (after reading the book’s two articles on the subject) to start sending my work to agents. You can send your beloved tome straight to publishers but I think the chances of success are even more remote that way. Although if all agents fail me, I might have to go down that route… In the book there is a massive ten double pages of agents contact details and about 6-8 relevant enteries on each page which are relevant to me (ie popular fiction)… that is a lot of SAE and postage to pay! Since popular fiction is a pretty broad church it is almost impossible to decide who might be your best bet- I have gone the alphabetical route, resigning myself to the long slog! As I said so far 2-0 to agents, with one decision outstanding. Plan to get another off today… will keep you updated
Possibly one of the most depressing thoughts I have had so far (and you call tell by this blog I have had a lot) is the realisation that even if my full manuscript does get called in I am unlikely to get accepted and even if I do manage to get an agent, there is still absolutely no guarantee of a publisher.
Cheery early morning thoughts!
