Following a young unpublished Reading writer's battle to get her debut novel noticed, while trying to juggle life and her second novel.

I am just working on my synopsis. Currently its my fourth submission and my fourth draft! My first was pretty pedestrian just a page explaining all the convolutions of the plot. Perhaps naively I thought that any agents would want to know the whole plot of the book. And maybe they do, but it is hard to make that snappy, especially since I like to think this novel has some unexpected twists which of course need alot of groundwork to explain!
However, in my last attempt I came to a different conclusion. I tried to sell it, sharp and snappy like a blurb on a jacket. However this means sacrificing any attempt at explaining your brilliant constructed plot- the two cant co-exist. As I said I am still waiting for Aitken Alexander to get back to me, but I feel confident enough to keep using this one, at least for a while.

Abstraction of Feeling

Emily Parker is aware that she is a sinner. It is not just the Confessional which tells her so, but her own conscience which she is not supposed to have.

Unexpectedly she is given an assignment by her boss, the unscrupulous editor Benjamin Bateman, to go undercover and infiltrate the Dolamores, an extremist sect. Blinded by the promised rewards and seduced by his rhetoric she accepts quickly, seeing this opportunity as salvation from her current, chaotic existence.

Yet gradually immersed in this foreign culture she finds her resolve unwinding even more rapidly. Tangled in a confusing love triangle and becoming more deeply involved with the radical political landscape, Emily seems further away from conformity than ever.

Only on returning does she begin to see clearly the repercussions of her actions as she is forced to question the motives of those closest to her.

Set in a disturbing dystrophic vision of Britain, Abstractions of Feeling explores a world where personal connectivity is outlawed and the monotony of daily life is only interrupted by sudden, destructive terrorist attacks. Filled with suspense and paranoia it questions how far individuality can be justified over a greater public good. 

In someways I feel little uneasy ‘selling’ it this way. Consciously I know I making to sound different from what it is, underselling it and simplfying it in a way. However it is all about getting noticed so I have swallowed my scruples, at least for now!
